TAMIL NADU JUDO ASSOCIATION 329/2017

What is Judo?

Judo, meaning "the gentle way", is far more than just a martial art grounded in precise technique and scientific mastery. Judo is not merely a graceful display of strength and elegance in motion, nor simply a sport to earn medals or build a career. Judo is a profound journey—a way of life to be embraced, lived, and loved. It is a philosophy infused with spirit, purpose, and deep-rooted values that transcend the physical.

The visionary behind this beautiful discipline, Sensei Jigoro Kano, transformed Judo from its parent art Jujitsu, with a noble aim—to craft a way of life guided by timeless principles like “Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort” (Seiryoku Zenyo) and “Mutual Welfare and Benefit” (Jita Kyoei). These ideals reflect the very core of ancient Vedic teachings and spiritual beliefs across cultures—that humanity is interconnected, and one’s well-being is bound to the well-being of all. It promotes an enduring vision of unity, compassion, and harmony.

Born in 1882, Judo made its way to Indian soil in 1929. Since then, it has blossomed through generations thanks to the passionate efforts of stalwarts like Sensei N.T. Bangera, Sensei Khanewala, Behram Mistry, and more recently, Sensei Mukesh.

Today, the Government of India through SAI, the Government of Tamil Nadu via SDAT, and visionary corporates like JSW, have invested wholeheartedly in the growth of Indian Judo—fueling dreams, empowering athletes, and striving to see the Indian flag rise proudly on international podiums.

Dedicated academies such as Vijay Bharat, STAR, VVN, and Fitzone continue to nurture young talent, igniting the spark of excellence across communities.

Inspiring mentors like Sensei Tony Lee, Sensei Yatish Bangera, Sensei Jiwan Sharma, and countless others work tirelessly, shaping not just medalists, but individuals of character, resilience, and honor.

In Tamil Nadu, Judo was first introduced in the 1970s by pioneers like Sensei Vijaykumar, Sensei Rajagopal, and Sensei Manikumar. It was later redefined in the 1980s by the late Sensei Elamparuthi, a true architect of dreams, who transformed Judo into a viable career path for many—leaving behind a legacy that still echoes in the hearts of students and champions today.

President’s Message

Vision & Mission of Tamilnadu Judo Association 329/2017

At the heart of the Tamilnadu Judo Association 329/2017 lies an unwavering mission—to ignite the flame of Judo in every corner of Tamil Nadu. Our goal is not merely to promote Judo as a martial art or a sport, but as a way of life—a transformative discipline that empowers individuals to stand strong both on the mat and in society. Beyond the dojo, we aim to cultivate warriors of character who are prepared to rise against immorality, resist anti-social forces, and uphold righteousness with unwavering spirit.

In proud collaboration with the Veer Viveka Namo Academy, our vision expands with renewed vigor—to deliver world-class, inclusive Judo education to every child, irrespective of background. Rooted in equality, enriched by technology, and guided by the principles of transparency and accountability, we envision a future where every learner receives not just training, but a transformative experience.

Our enhanced vision is deeply cultural and profoundly patriotic. We aspire to ensure that every school-going child in Tamil Nadu is not only trained in the art of Judo but is also imbued with the rich traditions, heritage, and moral fabric of our land. Through the timeless values of Judo—self-respect, respect for the deserving, courage, humility, honesty, modesty, and integrity—we aim to shape responsible citizens, elevate the soul of our state, and fortify the spirit of our great nation.

Let us build a generation that not only fights with skill but lives with purpose—a generation that makes Tamil Nadu proud and India greater.
